Cooking Up Innovation: Crafting a Menu of AI Faculty Development Options

Session Narrative

At the University of Florida, we are “building an AI University” where AI is for everyone. Ensuring that AI fluency is approachable by all faculty from all disciplines requires an innovative strategy. This session will explore how instructional designers and educational technologists collaborated across campus to serve a menu of faculty development options for AI assistance, comprising a full “three-course meal” of opportunities. Participants will explore a buffet of options that include appetizers (flexible, concise, and digestible trainings), main courses (in-depth, long-lasting learning communities), and desserts (high- touch, one-on-one consults). Each level will outline the key ingredients, including collaborators, resources, and approaches, to help participants design AI faculty development at their institutions.

Session presenter, Leslie Mojeiko is the recipient of the 2024 EDUCAUSE Rising Star Award.

Session Reflections

Academic Technology has been offering Remote Recess since the pandemic, but attendance has been decreasing over time. It’s interesting to hear how FUIT has made modifications to the structure, theme, etc. to regain their audience. Personally, I think the cooking metaphor (cookbooks, chef’s coats, etc.) are a little “gimmicky” but this seems to be working well for them. One of the things I think we could try based on this is having presenters together for their session rather than having multiple Zoom windows (one for each presenter). With the recording rooms that we have started building out, this could be possible if structured correctly.

The Faculty Learning Communities isn’t a new concept but works well for them. We (Academic Technology) have offered User Groups, FLCs, etc. for more longer-term exploration. Nothing new with this that could be newly applied in our area.

Regardless of the content, the presenters were very engaging!
